Forming in mid-2020 amidst pandemic-era restraints, three-piece Groningen band Slumbercloud was born from the memories of Seattle grunge. But ever since that birth, the band has abandoned their grungy roots to morph into a darker, noisier version of themselves; a dissonant edge has risen.
Feverishly chasing newfound passion, emotion and energy, Slumbercloud’s sound leaps effortlessly from noise rock to psychedelic, touching on stoner rock, post-hardcore punk and metal in the process. Each song is a bouquet of elaborate twists and turns, though never failing to offer deep reflection and social and metaphysical criticism with its lyrics.
After a debut year full of highlights, including packed-out shows at Vera Downstage and Het Pakhuis for Grunnsonic (ESNS) as well as the well-received debut EP Human Problem, 2024 has the band furiously writing new material, preparing to re-enter the studio, and playing their first shows outside of their hometown.
Slumbercloud’s performance style, though perhaps it sounds obvious, relies completely on the sonic experience. Opting to speak less and play more, the band performs their set seamlessly, exploring melodic, improvisational compositions and sample, drone, and noise-based instrumentals between songs.
Expect only greetings, gratitude, and goodbyes from vocalist Paddy Moran over the mic at a Slumbercloud performance - close your eyes, bang your head and let go into the music. It will be over as quickly as it begins; focus only on the joy of yourself and others at a Slumbercloud show, and you’ll find yourself joining the band’s own wavelength.
